When we were young, our parents never let us watch TV after 8 pm. 8 sharp, everyone has to be downstairs, bathed, eaten and opening up our books doing homework or revision. Depending on how old we were, after that, we have to go straight to bed; 9 when we were 7, 9.30 when we were 10, 10 when we were 13 and 10.30 when we were 15. On weekends. during the day, it's almost the same. When we seemed to be watching too much TV or playing computer games for too long, it's back to the round table.
Usually these sessions are for homework. However, don't even dream to sneak away even if you've done it. Instead, we would be given extra work by our parents (mostly Mak, because when Bapak volunteered to tutor us, we would always choose Mak instead). These extra work was known to us as 'time-table'. I know that the word was misused but that was what we call it. Even when we're done with our time-table, if there's still time, Bapak would ask Mak to give us 'tabaan' (supposedly one of my brothers mispronounced it. It's actually tambahan) until it's time for us to go to bed, or if it's the weekend, when it's time to visit nenek in Klang.
I left school 6 years ago.
Tomorrow, my dad is going back to school. He's taking a part-time degree course in USM in social anthropology. It's time for us to take revenge and use back his quotes when he tutored us. Just to see if he finds them as annoying as we found it when he said it to us. Hahaha.
1. Ni dah lama tak pegi sekolah ni, ingat lagi ke 'a' tu lurus ke bengkok? - usually after the year end holidays
2. Pensel, pemadam, pembaris, kotak pensel, dah ada belum? Pegi isi lepas tu letak dalam beg.
3. Belum 9.30 pun lagi. Pegi buat time table.
4. Dah tutup TV tu. Pegi baca buku.
5. Belajar rajin-rajin. Jangan main-main. Dengar cakap cikgu.
6. Nak bapak rotan?
7. Kenapa main-main buat kerja sekolah ni? Bapak bangun kang.
8. Cari apa? Pensel? Cuba tengok dekat tempat bawang. Dalam peti sejuk ke.
9. Kerja sekolah dah siap belum? Pegi buat.
10. Pegi kedai je beli pensel. Pegi kedai je beli pensel. Asyik hilang je. Makan ke?
Edited:
I just told my dad 'Pak, naik tidur. Esok sekolah'.
Priceless
